It’s because she’s so good and he’s so ridiculously bad. She agrees on helping him just to get a distraction, and he agrees on being helped just to get better at something. After he falls a couple of times and she helps him get back on his feet, they find a better rhythm and pace. He’s nowhere near good, but he’s managing. And she’s smiling.

He confesses: “I think the biggest reason why I needed this was to laugh a little.”

She smiles. Lydia could relate to that, but she won’t admit it. So instead she blinks a couple of times and tells him: “Well, that’s intelligent.”

“I am an intelligent guy,” he says, and winks. He feels like stabbing himself mentally for having winked. It had sounded so flirty and stupid and reckless.

She looks at him, surprised, but even more surprisingly so she doesn’t seem to find it odd. “Then prove me you’re not all brains. Show me some skill and gracefulness with ice-skating,” she teases, letting go of his hand and showing him what she knows.

He smiles, and follows.
